Many people believe that understanding our past and the connections it has to today’s problems is the fundamental goal of counseling. Indeed, our personal history is usually very much entangled with our current emotional and relational difficulties. A skilled counselor can help us better understand the connection between the past and the present or to develop insight into the origins of the emotional/relational obstacles we encounter.
However, that is usually just the first step. The burdens the past bequeaths to the present are not resolved solely through insight. The most successful approaches to psychotherapy will concentrate more on what can be done now. On how rather than why. These contemporary approaches also recognize the importance of what psychology calls self-talk. For that reason I have adopted the following quote by James Allen as a fundamental guide: “Every action and feeling is preceded by a thought.” Though written nearly a century ago, that statement succinctly expresses the outcome of modern psychological research. It also reflects the wisdom of the ages:
Paul.............Be transformed by the renewal of your minds.
Buddha........All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
Epictetus......Men are disturbed not by things, but by the views which they take of them.
My goal is for clients to become change-agents in their own lives by exploring and reevaluating both their past and present in the light of these ageless principles and applying them to their own circumstances while taking advantage of contemporary knowledge about human development.
